This was the first installment of the Sound of Africa mixtape series. I originally posted this on the digging4gold site April 2011.

At the time, the Azonto sound was still developing and was not yet a household name in Ghana. The biggest hit at the time - and one of the songs that led to the Azonto explosion - “Muje Baya,” was blasting out out of every kiosk and open street pub in Accra.

So, after months of dancing to these tunes, My friend, DJ Kev, and I decided to rent some cdjs and lock ourselves up in a dusty Accra apartment for a couple hours to bust out this mix. Looking back, this mix is a great example of the transition hiplife was making into the more house-oriented production of Azonto. If nothing else, it was definitely the launching point for my current musical trajectory. Enjoy!

Such and incredible moment, i got to experience last night…

As i was leaning on some random wall waiting for my class to begin at 7pm, I suddenly here a very familiar sound. “It’s Fuse! She de do me wayooo” The song was coming from a dark classroom that was locked. I begin to slightly loose it outside… So far in the 2 months I have been here, no one i have asked, has heard about Azonto. So to hear one of the anthems blazing out of this mysterious, dark, locked room was to say the least, very exciting!

So in my madness from the azonto excitement, i began knocking on the door until someone opened it. I automatically befriended the faces I saw as I entered the room. They were doing the dance too!!!! Ahhhhhhhhh Lost my shit! it was such an exciting moment. I began to dance along with them and chopped it up with them about other Azonto tunes. Ended up getting to class late… but man am i glad i showed up early!
