Text 25 Nov 9 notes Return to Culture: The rise of Wulomei

In the mid-senveties, there was a push within Ghanaian popular music for a return to tradition.  And it was out of this push that came the one and only, Wulomei.  Hailing from Accra, this band aided the rise of neo-traditional pop music by incorporating their native Ga rhythms into their sweet, laid back highlife numbers.

Always in traditional attire, Wulomei released several albums throughout the 70s and can still be found performing every weekend near the slums of Jamestown, Accra.  But mind you, if you go don’t make the fatal mistake I made of requesting the anthem of Kumasi’s soccer team (“Asante Kotoko,”one of my favorites) as they are strictly House of Oaks in there (Accra’s team).  The result was a 10-min rendition of their anthem prior to a 2-min half-hearted version of my request.

Lion and I were cracking up about that for the rest of the night.
