Sooo, I caved. Its a slippery slope when you let a day or two go by. Before you know it, a week’s gone and still no postings, but I assure all of you that it wasn’t without good reason.
For the last week or so I was participating in pure alchemy - converting dust-covered African records into actual viable commodities - in preparation for this record swap at UC Santa Cruz. Props to the homie Smokestack, Sean boogie, Dubspeak and a host of others who spent the day down there alongisde yours truly. Still some records left if any of you are interested (holla!)…

Enough of that though, let’s get back on track.
Next up for our 45 days of (now non-continuous) musical postings, we have the great Ebenezer Obey. A true musical pioneer, Ebenezer pushed the limits of Juju music by incorporating yoruba rhythmic elements into the mostly highlife-sounding genre. Prior to, Juju was, for the most part, heavily influenced by the Ghanaian sound that was dominating the region (In fact, Highlife was so prevalent in Nigeria that many considered it to have been of Nigerian decent).
I love the meditative quality of Juju music. It differs from the wistfulness of palm-wine Highlife, but somehow embodies a similar essence. Peep for yourself…
